Poverty and Illness Intertwined
Our neighbors living in poverty are making them highly vulnerable to illnesses and chronic diseases. Those living in impoverished conditions are in a higher risk of diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, mental illness, poor nutrition, decreased access to education, difficulty holding down a job, substance abuse, difficult interpersonal relationships, and more.
Poverty by the Numbers
- Approximately 2,000 people in our area live at 200% or below the federal property level.
- More than 50% of our patients work in some capacity, made more difficult with chronic illnesses.
- Our patients have to choose whether to pay, rent, utilities, buy food, or get critically-needed medical care on a regular basis.
Services include free primary medical care, free diagnostic and laboratory tests, free medication, free mental and dental health care, chronic disease management, and referrals to specialists. With an annual budget of $272,000, Hope Clinic provides life-saving care to those who would otherwise go untreated.
